From the land of the Ark of the Covenant ... an extraordinary collection of icons:
The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, located on the Horn of Africa, is an ancient and diverse country. Ethiopia remained an independent country throughout European colonialism and became a symbol of African freedom; many of the more interesting facets of its history, society, and religion are largely unknown outside the African Continent.
This exhibit uses religious art and artifacts to illustrate the Judeo-Christian traditions of Ethiopia as a way to explore this most ancient and fascinating nation. It features 60 small icons, triptychs, larger icons and illuminated manuscripts. The Museum's own collection of Ethiopian icons, stone carved triptychs and sacred objects will also be on display. The dates of the icons and objects range from the 16th century to the present.Learn more.
