Nashua River Watershed Association Upcoming Programs— October 2012
Dam Removal and River Restoration in Massachusetts Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. NRWA River Resource Center, 592 Main Street (Rt. 119) in Groton
A dam removal movement is sweeping the nation, with a growing awareness and appreciation of the numerous linked benefits. Dam removal can simultaneously retire obsolete (and often failing) infrastructure, eliminate owner liability, reduce flood hazards, and dramatically improve ecological conditions of the aquatic ecosystem. The Nashua River Watershed Association invites the public to join us for a free presentation on “Dam Removal and River Restoration in Massachusetts” on Wednesday, October 17, at 7:00 p.m., at the NRWA River Resource Center, 592 Main Street (Rt. 119) in Groton. Our presenter will be Alex Hackman, Restoration Specialist and Project Manager for the Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration. The Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration emphasizes dam removal as a river restoration tool, and is currently working on over 30 dam removal projects with local, state, and federal partners. This talk will describe the current climate, common issues, and science behind dam removal; including an overview of two new dam removal projects in the Nashua River watershed. Alex holds a Master’s Degree in Aquatic Ecology and Watershed Science from the University of Vermont, and has worked in the environmental field for the past 20 years in private, public, and academic settings. A self-proclaimed “stream nerd,” he currently is managing a variety of dam removal and other restoration projects in Massachusetts.
