On Tuesday November 11th the Fort Devens Museum will be open for a special program recognizing Veterans Day and commemorating Armistice Day-the end of World War I. The day’s schedule includes a livestream of the Bells of Peace, a new exhibit, and remarks on the occasion.
The museum will livestream the Bells of Peace Ceremony on our large screen at 10:45 AM. The Doughboy Foundation sponsors the annual Bells of Peace Ceremony held at the National WWI Memorial in Washington DC. Bells of Peace commemorates the end of World War I and pays tribute to the 116,516 Americans who died during that conflict.
A brand new exhibit will be on display on November 11th during the museum’s open hours of 10 AM to 3 PM. Learn about the origins of Armistice Day and view artifacts, photographs, and documents from the museum’s collection related to the end of World War I and the immediate post-war period. Items on display will include painted helmets, panoramic photographs, and stories of how our local communities celebrated November 11, 1918.
To enhance this exhibit, we will also display a selection of World War I posters from a private collection. The posters were collected by Phillippa Patey as a young girl living in Newtonville, MA during World War I. Join us at 1:00 to learn more with remarks by her daughter Jenifer Burckett-Picker.
This program is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. The Fort Devens Museum is located on the 3rd floor of 94 Jackson Road, Devens, MA. For more information please email info@fortdevensmuseum.org.
