Join the Minuteman Road Club on July 28 for Tim Johnson's Wachusett Fondo. This summer classic returns with a New England cycling legend at the front of the field. The only American to race the World Championships in road, cross country and cyclo-cross, Johnson raced for more than 20 years at the international level. As the first American to earn a medal at the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships, Johnson led the globalization for 'cross. A six-time U.S. champion, he also posted amazing wins on the road, including a victory in Australia's Herald Sun Tour. But the popular Massachusetts native never lost his love of New England, winning such regional events as Providence and Gloucesters but also such road classics as the Mount Washington Hill Climb and the MRC's own Harvard and Sterling races. Equally passionate about bike advocacy, Johnson has raised funds and awareness for People for Bikes and MassBike, for which he serves as a board member.
Hosted by the Wachusett Brewery, Tim Johnson's Wachusett Fondo will showcase glorious roadways of Central Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire. Riders will have to manage some gravel sectors before the final ascent of Mount Wachusett before the descent to the post-ride party and lunch at the Brew Yard in Westminster.
The ride will start and end at Wachusett Brewing Co. Kick back after the ride and enjoy some food and beverages with your friends in the outdoor beer garden or the recently opened indoor brew yard.
Proceeds from the event will benefit MassBike. The Massachusetts Bicycle Coalition (MassBike) promotes a bicycle-friendly environment and encourages bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation. MassBike works with lawmakers to create laws that make sense for the safety of all bike riders and works with state, city and town officials to enforce existing laws. They work through education and outreach to better the knowledge, awareness and skills of both bicyclists and drivers. A 501c3 non-profit, MassBike relies support from members, donors, and sponsors.
