Commissioned the USS Squalus, this submarine sank off the New Hampshire coast during a May 23, 1939, test dive. A rescue effort managed to save over half the crew and later that year the ship itself was salvaged. Repaired and recommissioned as the USS Sailfish, it took on missions in the Pacific Ocean during WWII. Today its conning tower is on view at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine.

Historian Bob Begin will present this program. He’s an Army veteran who later built a 35-year civilian career in the paper and film conversion field, becoming a logistics manager.

This program will be held virtually via Zoom, though very limited seating is available at the museum. Please contact us for further information.
