SPINNERS HOSTING AMERICA EAST TOURNAMENT, MAY 22-24
LeLacheur Park to host 3-day tournament with College World Series trip at stake
LOWELL, MASS. – The Lowell Spinners, Class-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, will welcome the America East Conference Championship to LeLacheur Park May 22-24, with a trip to the College World Series on the line.
While the tournament teams are still to be decided, regular season champion Maine is sure to be one of the participants, with 2012 tournament upstart Stony Brook on the cusp of qualifying for the four-team tournament.
“With UMass-Lowell joining the America East Conference in the fall, we are thrilled to welcome the tournament to LeLacheur Park,” said Spinners President and General Manager Tim Bawmann. “The America East is a premier conference with an incredible wealth of talent. This will represent an excellent chance for baseball fans in the region to see top notch players in advance of the Spinners season.”
The tournament will feature the top four finishers in the conference with the winner receiving an automatic berth into the College World Series. Maine, Albany and Binghamton have all clinched berths, while Stony Brook and Hartford will go to the wire for the final spot. The regular season concludes Saturday, May 18, at which point the match-ups will be finalized.
All games in the tournament will be streamed through www.AmericaEast.com and the Championship Game will be televised live on ESPN3 Friday, May 24 (potentially Saturday, May 25) at 8 p.m.
“We hope this is the start of a lengthy partnership,” said Bawmann. “From Commissioner Huchthausen on down, this is a top notch organization to work with and we look forward to the tournament finding a long-time home at LeLacheur!”
