SHIRLEY -- This year's Shirley Hoe Down has some old favorites and some new excitement.

On Saturday June 4, starting at noon on Shirley Common, there will be food, jewelry, crafts, and flea market booths, along with children's activities and plenty of music.

Performing first, there will be a teen rock band, then some country music, finishing off with a concert by the Nashoba Dixie Land Band from 4:30 to 6 p.m. During the day there will be the bouncy bounce, the egg-toss contest, potato sack races, and the crazy-hat parade.

Many local organizations will need the support of the community at their food concessions. The Girl Scouts will start the day with iced coffee and Trinity Chapel will have their pies. ShirleyArts! will have hot dogs and hamburgers, while the Boy Scouts cook sausages and the Cub Scouts make fried dough.

The Golden Agers will have a variety of home-baked products and the Historical Society will have chicken and salads. The Center Town Hall Committee will have chili and soup for sale. Also on the menu will be soft drinks, lemonade, and Slushies, and Shirley Youth baseball will bring a variety of other snacks.

The Friends of Hazen Library will have cookbooks for sale, Shirley Art Association will have samples of their arts, and the Museum will have Christmas ornaments with Shirley scenes on them. Young people will be raising money for breast-cancer research and animal shelters.

New to the Hoe Down this year will be demonstrations by some Irish stepdancers, and a robot from Nashoba Tech.
The Shirley Play Board is sponsoring Cow Chip Bingo with two $100 prizes for the lucky winners. The cows will be led to the field next to the Senior Center at 2 p.m. to do what they need to do. The Meetinghouse is also selling raffle tickets, with the winners being able to ring the steeple bell.

Later in the afternoon, the REMAX hot air balloon will arrive. Depending on the weather conditions, folks will be able to ride up in the balloon for a $5 donation to Loaves and Fishes.

All the food concessions have been reserved, but there is lots more space for folks selling crafts or flea-market items. Contact Meredith at 978-425-9328 or email at mail@shirleyhistory.org if you want to check on sales possibilities.

Or just bring your lawn chair and sit back and enjoy the afternoon.
