Established in 2014 by the The Moving Icon blogsite, Byzanfest is the first web-based film festival dedicated to Orthodox Christian short films. The aim is to share the best of these films and the stories they tell with Orthodox and non-Orthodox viewers across the globe.
The Festival showcases films that reflect Orthodox Christian themes, beliefs, culture and values. Although a film may not appear to have 'Orthodox' subject matter, it can still be deemed so because it was created by an Orthodox Christian filmmaker who maintained an Orthodox phronema ("mindset") during the creative process, remaining faithful to their Christian sense of dignity, morality and self-respect.
The name "Byzanfest" is in honor of the great Byzantine Empire, a place of wisdom, art and faith. Although it may no longer exist, the spirit and values of Byzantium shine in the works of Orthodox Christians in this digital era.
Films selected for these screenings are all award-winners from the 2014 and 2015 Byzenfest competitions, made by filmmakers from a variety of Orthodox traditions. The same set of 6 short films is being shown on both Thursday September 24 and on Saturday September 26.
