This documentary by filmmaker and scholar Nina Zaretskaya is based on the exhibition "RUSSIA!" that was displayed at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 2005-2006. The exhibition was a vast retrospective of Russian art history, from icons of the 13thcentury through the post-Perestroika avant garde of the late 20th century. The film is divided into 12 episodes that each features a chronological period of Russian art history. Video from the exhibit is complemented by in-depth commentary from curators and historians, and further illustrated by dramatic re-enactments of select historic events adapted from Soviet and Russian films. The film presents a fresh look at Russian cultural development, viewed through the compound lens of history, politics, religion, and economics, and reveals the soul, character, and sensibilities of the Russian people through the amazing art they have created and collected throughout the country's complex and difficult history.
