600 people died by suicide in Massachusetts in 2010, including 82 young people under the age of 25.
In January 2011, Tom Cavanagh died by suicide in Providence, Rhode Island. Tom played briefly in the National Hockey League for the San Jose Sharks and previously with the Worcester Sharks of the AHL, where he was a crowd and team favorite.
On Sunday, March 24th, the SHINE Initiative and Worcester Sharks, in partnership with the Central MA Regional Suicide Prevention Coalition, will host a pre-game mental health and suicide prevention symposium in the DCU Convention Center from 1:30-2:30 pm.
A video remembering Tom Cavanagh, and produced by the Cavanagh family, will be shown. Dr. Barry Feldman of the UMass Medical School, an expert in suicide prevention, will be our featured speaker. Attendees of this timely and important symposium will also be invited as guests of the SHINE Initiative and Worcester Sharks to attend the 3:00 pm
game that day between the Sharks and Hershey Bears.
