On June 20th, the Massachusetts House voted on a bill now being dubbed the Commonwealth's 'grand bargain' for its bipartisan compromise. The bill is relative to bundling the state's sales tax holiday, minimum wage, and paid family medical leave. Ingraining the tax holiday as an annual occurrence, the bill establishes that the legislature will choose the date by June 15th of each year. The bill would raise the state minimum wage from $11 to $15 an hour over a five-year period. Starting in 2019 the state would see a $1 increase followed by an annual $0.75 increase through 2023. Minimum wage for tipped workers will also see an increase from $3.75 to $6.75 an hour through a $0.60 increase over the same five years. The bundled legislation passed the house with a 119-34 vote and the Governor signed it into law on June 28th.
