Herbert Wendell Gleason's "Thoreau's Country"
Partners: Bolton Public Library, Concord Public Library, and Bolton Historical Society
Location: Bolton Public Library
A slide lecture of selected Concord images by photographer, Thoreauvian, and environmental activist Herbert Wendell Gleason (1855-1937). The digital slides were made from Gleason's beautifully hand-colored original glass lantern slides. The Concord Free Public Library holds not only the photographer's slides but also the accompanying notes for his program. This is the Thoreau Centenary slide lecture delivered by Gleason in 1917 in Concord's Town Hall, following personal recollections by Edward Waldo Emerson. Selected, introduced, and presented by Leslie Perrin Wilson.
Leslie Perrin Wilson is Curator of the William Munroe Special Collections, Concord Free Public Library, and an author on local historical and literary topics. Her book In History's Embrace was published in 2007. She also wrote the guidebook section for the most recent edition of Historic Concord, and the Lexington Fight, published in 2010.
This presentation is part of Freedom's Way National Heritage Area's "In Thoreau's Footsteps" series. Visit freedomsway.org to learn about upcoming Thoreau programs.
