Groton Community School (GCS) will welcome Jim Trelease, author of the New York Times bestseller The Read Aloud Handbook, for a lecture and book-signing event on Tuesday, October 22nd, 2013 at 7 p.m. The National Commission on Reading has declared that reading to children is the most important factor in achieving reading success. At the lecture, Trelease will discuss how reading aloud to your child leads to a lifelong desire to read as well as ways to incorporate reading to your children into your daily routine. "Jim Trelease will tell you why language and reading is so important,? said Jennie Fitzkee, an educator at Groton Community School for more than 29 years who is also featured in the latest edition of The Read Aloud Handbook. ?He will give you startling facts, and also tell stories that bring language and reading home. His presentation is captivating. You won't want to miss this.? A question and answer session with Trelease will follow the lecture. Attendees will also have an opportunity to purchase a signed copy of The Read Aloud Handbook. "I have been an advocate for reading aloud and the huge impact it has on young children since the mid-eighties when I first read The Read Aloud Handbook,? added Fitzkee. ?When I heard Jim Trelease speak some years ago, I was thunderstruck when he said, 'The number of words a child hears can be directly attributed to his or her success in school.' For parents, it was a simple equation; read to your children and they will do well in school. For me, it validated reading aloud. Language is the foundation for learning." This event is open to the public, however, space is limited and advance registration is required. Register to attend this exciting event, which will be held at Groton Community School located at 110 Boston Road, Groton, by calling 978-448-6179.
