On April 6, Destination Groton will present a historic reenactment and lecture featuring guest speakers made possible by a generous grant from the Town of Groton’s Commissioners of Trust Funds. This family event is open and free to all.
The April 6 celebration Includes a gathering on the Town Common at 1 pm for a Minutemen and Fife and Drum reenactment. At 2 pm all will proceed to the Richardson – Mees Performing Arts Center, at Lawrence Academy to hear from our guest speakers including State Representatives Margaret Scarsdale and Dan Sena, along with local historian Joshua Vollmar give his lecture on the important role Groton played in the American Revolution.
“On April 19, 1775, 185 Groton men gathered on the common in front of the Old Meeting House/First Parish Church to answer the call and march to Concord, continuing towards Boston where Groton’s Col. William Prescott led the American forces into battle against the British forces at Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775,” historian Joshua Vollmar said. “With the contributions of women who guarded against spies and Black Grotonians who fought for freedom which had been denied them, Groton captures the full spectrum of the moment which set in motion the nation’s founding,” Vollmar added.
“We are so pleased to announce this historic event and wish to convey our sincere thanks to the Commissioners of Trusts along with our co-sponsors: the Lawrence Academy, the Groton School, and the Prescott Community Center,” said Greg Sheldon, Chair of Destination Groton.
