A landmark in operatic history, Henry Purcell's music depicts the brief, but passionate love affair of Dido, the proud and young Queen of Carthage, and the Trojan war hero Aeneas. Their ultimate, tragic separation, climaxes with Dido's famous dying lament. Like Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the story of Dido and Aeneas has become a "literary icon for the tragic lover."
