Classical Meets Jazz: Third Stream Music

TUESDAY, APRIL 19, 2016 at 7:00 pm

What is Third Stream Music? A term coined by Gunther Schuller at a talk he gave in 1956 at Brandeis University, Third Stream is "a new genre of music located about halfway between jazz and classical music." In Schuller's view, this new genre was created to combat purists in both the jazz world and the classical world. To play Third Stream music, one had to be proficient in both. Schuller created the Third Stream Department at New England Conservatory along with Ran Blake. Our lecturer, Jerry Sabatini, was a graduate of the Third Stream program (now Contemporary Improvisation) and studied with Blake. Jerry will explore some of the myths and misconceptions about Third Stream Music, bringing new understanding to this synthesis of composed and improvised music.
