Centennial Presentation: Annawon Weeden Native American Tradition Bearing and Cultural Preservation
Annawon Weeden, named after the last Wampanoag war chief to surrender during King Phillip’s War, began performing with his family during his early years. Since then he has become a father, activist, tribal mentor, artist, singer, dancer, model and actor. Drawing on his Mashpee Wampanoag and Narragansett Pequot lineage, Weeden shares experiences as a tradition bearer and discusses cultural preservation of Eastern Woodland Native Peoples during this special centennial presentation. Annawon’s work has been featured at the Haffenreffer Museum, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Smithsonian and the Boston Children’s Museum, and he has appeared on National Geographic, PBS, and the History Channel.
