In December, the Bolton Historical Society presents the art of Bill Barss (1916-1990). Location is the gallery/program room at the Bolton Public Library. Sara Barss, the artist's daughter, will be our guest at a reception on Tuesday, December 3 from 7-8:30 p.m. All are welcome. Barss lived in Bolton for many years starting in the 1950s and was best-known for his illustrations on book jackets. He worked for the Ford Motor Company, Follet Publishing, and the Houghton Mifflin Company. He designed and illustrated many dust jackets, including books by Isaac Asimov and John Jacob Niles. The works that are on display in the Library were discovered in an artist's cabinet in the attic at Sawyer House. They consist of printer's mechanicals for book covers. Most of the works consist of the base (on which an image is painted) and an acetate overlay that has lettering. What makes this work extraordinary is that it was created before the computer graphics era; all of the work, including the lettering on the overlay, was done by the artist's hand. |
