Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

EMT basics are the foundation of pre-hospital emergency medical care.  You will learn how to conduct the initial evaluation, treat and transport patients with medical problems as well as those with injuries from accidents (trauma).  You will learn to recognize and provide initial care for shock, heart and breathing problems, strokes, burns, diabetes, drowning and accidents.  This course includes an optional extrication hands-on, HAZMAT 8-hour certification, and AHA Healthcare Provider CPR.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be eligible to take the practical and written certification exams to become certified nationally and in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  Students must be at least 18 years old at the time of the exam and be able to lift 125 lbs.   Students must be able to read, understand, and communicate in English. This program exceeds the National and State Standard Curriculum for EMTs.

You will learn to perform a complete pre-hospital patient assessment; understand current legal aspects of pre-hospital care; identify and treat common medical emergencies; identify and treat traumatically injured patients; identify and treat special patient populations (ob/gyn, pediatrics, geriatric, environmental emergencies); and identify the properties of approved pharmacological agents.  

Textbook Required:

Textbook ($175) is provided by the instructor and payable on the first night.

Robert Gemma, Firefighter for twenty-one years and EMT Instructor/Coordinator for twenty-eight years, has been involved in the instruction of EMS at Northeastern University, Bunkerhill Community College, Brandeis University, First Response EME, and NCTI.
