Ft. Devens Museum Presents Awards and Speaker
To mark Armed Forces Day, May 19
Fort Devens Museum’s Armed Forces Day celebration on Saturday, May 19th, offers a special award presentation, a guest speaker, new displays of military memorabilia, the sale of over a hundred books on military subjects and of military paraphernalia, and raffle prizes to vie for, plus light refreshments and the chance to talk with others interested in military history.
Three of the Museum’s most cherished veterans will be presented with Quilts of Valor in an 11 a.m. ceremony. Receiving these special “reminders of appreciation and gratitude” will be World War II veterans Joe Landry of Shirley and John McAuliffe of Worcester, and Christian de Marcken, also of Worcester, who grew up in occupied Belgium in WWII and later was an MP in the U.S. Army. Explaining these awards and making the presentations will be Darlene Coit of Townsend and Joan Schwerin of Ayer.
Starting at 12:30 p.m., guest speaker at the Museum’s open house LTC Ronald E. Anzalone will talk about the Army’s Special Forces units. He will be speaking from experience as he served in various command posts with the 10th Special Forces Group, the unit which was later assigned for several years to Fort Devens.
From Museum door opening at 10 a.m. to its closing at 4 p.m., the full collection of used military history books and an assortment of military gear will be on sale. Topping raffle items will be the conclusion of the Museum’s long-running 50-50 raffle, with a drawing to take place along with determining winners of various other raffle prizes. Come to enjoy good conversation with others interested in military and local history while enjoying light refreshments. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. The Museum is located on the 3rd floor of 94 Jackson Road, Devens, and is wheelchair accessible. For more information please call 978-772-1286 or email info@fortdevensmuseum.org.
