SUMMARY:* THE WORLD ACCORDING TO ROBERT ALTMAN
DESCRIPTION:THE WORLD ACCORDING TO ROBERT ALTMAN\n\nRobert Altman (1924-2006)\, one of America's most innovative and prolific directors\, left a legacy of ensemble-acted films that comment on society and also on films themselves. \n\n \n\nIn this seminar\, we will watch and review six films\, beginning with Altman's hit\, M.A.S.H.\, and ending with his last film\, A Prairie Home Companion. Altman allows us to glimpse aspects of American society (country music and the 70's in Nashville and Los Angeles and the film industry in the 90's in The Player) and also rethink film conventions such as the western McCabe & Mrs. Miller and the British manor mystery Gosford Park. Watching a film a week\, participants will come to the seminar prepared to discuss Altman's directing style and what it reveals to us as the audience.\n\n \n\nWhen: WEDNESDAYS\, 1:00-2:30 pm\, September 18-October 16 + final session (date and time TBD)\, six sessions\n\nPre-registration is required online at gpl.org\n\nWhere: Sibley Hall\n\n \n\nFacilitator: Dr. Mary Jennings\, former Superintendent of Schools for the Groton-Dunstable School District\, has lived in Groton for twenty years. Early in her educational career\, she taught film study\, attending film criticism at the British Film Institute. Now retired\, she volunteers at the Groton Public Library as Curriculum Coordinator of their Life Long Learning program and tutors English as a Second Language.
